Eventually, when 0ad as planned is more-or-less complete, I think it would be neat to be able to chain together civilizations as an outgrowth of Civilization Phases. For example, you pick Athenians or Spartans, eventually become Macedonians, then Byzantines, then Turks.

Also, it would be nice so a civ can be defined as a collection of assets and tech trees, and then balance tweaking can be done separately based on the civs available. So 0ad becomes a certain collection of chained civs & ballence tweeks, and hypothetical "AD500" another, perhaps slightly overlapping, collection of chained civs & ballence tweeks.

Having all of history in one game like civilization seems ridiculous and hard to balance, but different ages can be balanced separately with assets shared.

Hope that makes sense.
personally, ive thought that that would be a roughly good idea for some future civilizations, but not that they actually transition into those civs; going on the original 6 civilizations, my personal ideas had been Republican Romans to Imperial Romans, Hellenes to Eastern Romans/Byzantines, Celts to Germanics, and Achaemenids to Sassanids (for example). since there's ten civs now, it would probably be better to figure out closer analogies, perhaps going on how similar their cultures were even if they werent ethnically or geographically similar (for example, the Spartans could be the BC equivalenet to AD Huns)
Hey! Check out the plans for my mythology mod on my site! Post input and comments in the discussion thread!

adding in the eastern civilization would add some nice variety to the current selection, imo.

This game is gonna be something special . keep it up guys ! would be wonderful to have lusitanians too !
" The descrption of the Punic Wars by Strabo is full of references to the eximious Lusitanian riders who could easily climb escarpments where no other mounted armies would dare to try. "

Lusitanians would be good to add, but there would need to be someone who could help design the civ profile and alter the existing Iberian civ profile to remove the Lusitanian influences (Variato, etc.).

lt m see: Celt split into Gauls and Britons, Hellenes into Sparta, Macedon and Athens. and now Iberians and Lusitans.
Given the difficulty to even find enough details to design the generic Iberians that's probably not going to happen. But as Michael said, the first obstacle to overcome is to find enough details to create a civ profile. Then the art etc would need to be created, but if nothing else it can be done as a mod after part 1 is released, so it's not like the work of gathering the information would be lost in case we're not able to do it for the version one release.

I dont think they will be whitewashed , the diversity is never a negative point even if they have some familair traits they will be different factions and more choice ( intelligently balanced of course and yes im conscious that more armies you have its get even harder to balance the game , but than again which RTS game is 100% balanced out there ? ) I know its hard to separate lusitanians from iberains but ift we are talking about them as two different factions thousands of years after they lived than they must have had something so different than each other to separate them in roman eyes and the books of history that followed . I guess it has to be part historical research and part assumption and creativity to create lusitanians out of iberians or any other sub faction out of their main geographic races. The feeling of playing with lusitanians alone is more powerful tham the desire that they have to bee 100% or 90% diverse from iberians for example. Probablly it took geographic locations and some different ideas and believes to separate a tribe from and other ( still happens today ) and make them diverse to the point to be remember thousands of years after they walked on this planet. So Even if a sub faction has ONLY 40% or even only 30% of diversity from its mother faction it should be accepted , the fact that they would be there represanted in a videogame that simulates the era they lived in and the fact that you will have a number of gamers that will use that particular army with that particular name just because it means something to them makes it worth while. And lets say it , would be cool to have a game with lusitanians and spartans and other such factions that other video games didnt explore in the past for those difficulties. I find it hard to believe that any other historical RTS game has made such detailed historical research and had more passion than the team and all helpers on 0.AD so the only hope to see such things happen is on a game like this.
