Thread idea taken from 0ad

Well, who will you play as first, in the random map part of the game? (or if were lucky multiplayer) Not counting the campaigns that will be released in chunks before the entire game.

For me, deffinatly the Forces of Evil, probably in the 3rd age. Second would most likely be the Dwarves, not sure what age though.

The Nandor. Oooooh yes, the Nandor.

I'd much rather be Mirkwood in the TA, since they are the most numerous of the Elven kingdoms, but that's obviously not an option - as of yet.

Sindar, First Age

I always feel like the Noldor are too uptight and too legalistic, while the Sindar seem more quiet and more content with what they have.

Speaking of which, I need to ask a question: how functional will the 'minor' civilizations be? Will they have a complete assortment of units to fill all roles the way the major civilizations do? I seem to recall that the minor civs will be made playable, but it would be good to know how complete they will in fact be.

Minor civilazations are pretty much that, minor. As in they didn't have that big of a role or weren't numerous enough to make a big impact. I think that most will have a few units, but may be lacking in some areas of combat.
I remeber that they were going to be used to trade with, and make you stronger by having alliances with them. I think some races such as the Forces of Evil can use the minor civs units as mercenaries but come with certain penalties.

But I dont remeber hearing about them becoming playable, could be wrong though.

Dwarves are FTW.

Dwarves will be pretty awesome considering that most of their base is underground. Building a maze of passageways confusing any enemy that gets in.

A very close runner up for me.

Well, I'm not quite sure, then, why Mirkwood is a minor faction. It had the highest population of all Elven realms of the West during the WR.

Noldor, because they arent reclusive isolationists that hide behind their wives like the Sindar.

Some Minor units might be playable in some scenarios eventually (please take note that i said might), but i'd say that what Crazy Thumbs stated should be taken as a valid general rule... :)

I'd like to play Sindar during FA as well... :D

I seem to remember reading that the Minor civilizations were to be made playable, although they would remain minor (read "incomplete"): without a full complement of units serving different functions they would not perform effectively against a full, 'Player' civilization. An analogy, imagine a faction in Age of Mythology that simply could not produce any unit capable of countering one of the three basic troop types - it would lose by default against anybody capable of fielding the unit it couldn't counter. I As such this would only be a practical option in designer scenarios where the weaknesses of the playable Minor civilization would be compensated by the design of the scenario, or if the Minor civ somehow somehow managed to get complementing units/buildings/goods from some other Minor (or Player) civilization to fill in the blind spots. This is the impression I get from reading the unit lists of some of the minor civs already planned for the Third Age (Bree, the Mountain orcs, and Dale): they're missing needed units, military units most often.

In general, I agree that in the Third Age, the Noldor are a minor civilization, while the Avari are a major one. Rivendell mattered in the Third Age only because it was a haven for the heroes of other factions, most notably the remnants of Arnor and most importantly of all the Fellowship of the Ring.

Incidentally, Rohirwine, why Sindar for you, too? Same reasons as me, or different?

I would definitely play as the dwarves first and then the Edan, I believe that the dwarves would give the most variance in the civs.

I want to play First Age Noldor first. Sure, they had some serious flaws, but they are still my favorites.

Sorry for the mega-necromancy... at this point, any post to an existing thread is necromancy.
