The Romans and Celts battle in a grassy meadow in Northern Italia. This will certainly not be the last these two great powers clash.

This debuts our first glimpse of the Romans as they will appear in the game as well as a new lok for our grass terrain textures. Enjoy! :)

Nah, they probably are just way better strategists than us, making sure that nobody can attack them from the back.

Oh, right, it's a pond....
Ah well.
---
Goods: Great charge. I like the guy in the front moving them on. Had the romans archers there though...
The grass is terrific too.

Bads: Why do the romans look like clones? It's just so regular it looks surreal.
And wasn't the triplex acies in the cohort style created after the time in this 'shot?

dwx1618 - The Romans might look less like "Attack of the Clones" in the higher resolution shot. http://www.wildfiregames.com/~art/screensh...y-1280x1024.jpg

Not sure about the maniples system with the checkerboard style formations. Paul will have to fill us in on that.

But if you look at the really high resolution shot, you'll see they are in fact clones of Jango Fett. That's how Rome managed to breed an army for a single purpose: to destroy the world of Men. I'm sure the historians could confirm this.

Excellent work :)

As for the maniple system, it had existed before the time of our Romans, which dates to the late 200s BC. It was used before the Punic Wars against Pyrrhus IIRC, so it is quite capable. As I recall in my extremely tired state at 1:46 AM MST, it was developed some time after the Gallic capture of Rome, in 390 BC.

I like it a lot. The gauls run nicely disorganized. But the cavalry horses seem to run in synch. It may look very artifical, I hope you change it as Rome:TW has the "asynch animations" option...looks more real.

What!? You don't think the horses are disciplined to gallop in a well-trained synchronous manner?

Even with the high-res shot I can't tell for sure. Are the Romans about to throw Pila? Or are they holding Gladii above their heads?

I believe the two front formations are holding swords, with the formations on the back line holding spears. I don't think there are any ranged units there.
I could be wrong, knowing nothing of Roman military of this type.

This is due to unit needs. The front row are hastatus, while the second rank is principes, and the third rank triarius. These are the troops types of the Roman army of the Punic Wars, arrayed in that formation. For our purposes the hastatus uses the gladius ingame, while in reality the hastatus and principes both used the pilum.

Principes are to be armed with the pilum, but I am not sure if it was ever done ingame yet, seeing as I disappeared on vacation :)

Actually, the more I look at this shot, the less I like it. I sincerely apologize, guys. Next time I'll give you something with a bit more eyecandy. ;)

It better be soon, Mythos. This wait was -way- too long. ;)

It's still a pretty good screenshot. But I can't say that the Romans really excite me in the picture at all. They just look rather boring... and I don't think it's because of my Roman hatred, more that there isn't enough variety in the unit choices.

The Celts look cool as always, though. I especially like the naked cavalry. Who is the hero(?) commanding the charge?

And artistic appearance aside, the Celts did a great job of conquering the world :P Standardization is the key to succes, however artists hate it ;)

The Romans were fearsome because they were organized. Just like the Italian mob.

The Celts were fearsome because they were crazy wild people that partied like rockstars. I can attest to that!

The Vikings were fearsome because they were calm and giggled while they beheaded their foes... or friends.
