Suilaid all.

I know this is a stupid question, but what exactly is the roll of the game designers. Obviously designing the game, but which parts of it. I noticed that TLA is looking for a game designer. I also wondered, why would a game designer need MS Excel?

If this is considered spamming, I apologise.

Game desingers have to go over every single aspect of the game down to the smallest detail and document it so that the game can be made. It's an important job that figures out how the game will play and what the game will be like. One of the game designers could be more specific on this.

Well, game design encompasses just about everything from dreaming up the concept to seeing it realized. For example, some of the things that have been discussed recently include anything from the nuances of the languages used by factions in various time periods to the political breakdown of Middle-earth during the First Age.

And yes, having Microsoft Excel is a must; just this past week I had to submit a report on the geopolitics of West Beleriand. A spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel makes arranging and read the data that much easier for everyone.

programmers make the world move and function
artists make the world look
designers make the world come alive

althou excel isn't really a must, there's a free alternative in OpenOffice.

Someone apparently forgot to mention that our primary task is hurling :D at each other... :D

*self :D for being so silly

Seriously: game designers, most of all, continuously pour a lot of ideas trying to depict Arda the best we can. A lot of research work within the professor's writings is needed of course (not only The Silmarillion, LotR, The Hobbit, but also Unfinished tales, Lost tales and, obviously the whole bunch of the History of Middle Earth volumes....). The second step involves checking the technical feasibility of the ideas proposed, and their general appeal (well, sometimes appeal takes the first place), then... ...on to another subject.
By the way: we have recently adopted a new organizational procedure: we discuss the general issues together, and divide the details' tasks among us. Work seems to flow more seamlessy in this way than it did before... :)
Hope this helps understanding our work, and no: your question cannot be considered spam at all... :) (y)

Yay! Now the only thing to complete my day is to find out 0AD and TLA aren't being compiled in VisualC++ (hopefully, seeing as I've heard Linux support is being planned).

RL is the worst game I've ever played. The graphics may be mind blowing but it's way too difficult, you can't save your game at any point, the plot sucks and the AI is frankly the worst I've ever seen.

They are :D (at least on Windows - the Linux version uses GCC. (Supporting multiple compilers on one platform is a waste of effort; and VC++ generally makes smaller, faster code than GCC, and it's still free (as in beer), so it seems to be 'best' from a pragmatic perspective.))
