Unit experience Experience/competance levels for units?

I did a search and could not find any reference to it in any of the forums to-date.

Can/do units gain experience levels in TLA and become more effective as they do so? If they can, this would be useful not only for trying to keep specific desired units alive (in addition to their simple costliness) but also useful if a mapmaker wishes to spawn a group of "elite" units of one of the normal unit types.

Yes units do gain expereince throughout the game in the form of levels. There are four levels of experience but you will most likely never reach the fourth one, since its hard to keep units alive that long I guess, someone said this somewhere. This can be done by upgrades which I think upgrades your units in one company to the next level, other than that i'm not sure how else they gain experience. Maybe through kills or how long they have been in battle?

Could units be given experience using the editor?

yes - we will have a 4-level unit experience system ... each level-increase gives some noticeable boni and attributes to the unit ...

yes :D but only in player-generated random maps/scenarios ... you will not be able to alter your unit-stats in a Campaign ...

Cool!
BTW, I was wondering... what are goods (wine, jewelry etc.) used for? DO you sell them at a profit, do they enable certain units? Also, the Edain can gather pelts (for leather) from the animals they kill. If you kill an animal, and taks a worker onto it, will it collect food or animal skin?

Goods can be used to trade. If you have a certain amount of a certain good it gives you a bonus depending on the amount you have.

More info on goods here.

A question from me: so will units level only through upgrades a player buys for them?

no - i think you've misunderstood - the solely source of experience points is prevailing in battles. the mentioned upgrades will just boost some attributes of the units ...

But the point is that by writing scenario design scripts (or whatever system we use), we can give units experience, as well as have them perform in combat.

How significant would experience levels be for a unit? For instance, I assume a level 1 villager is prettymuch hopleless against a level 1 of just about anything else, but how about a level 4 villager?

woah ... easy guys ... i think you are still way to preoccupied with AoX-style games ...

*whispers* we are currently moving towards a more global and macro-ish approach ... *ahem* ... but you didn't hear that from me :D

(same holds true for that other thread in here ... that one w/ the tribal villagers ...)

Then I did so indeed. But I suspected, that's why I asked :D.

That's sounds very interesting and good! I always thought it a bit of a hassle to let the guys with the more experience survive, while in the middle of a battle with dozens of units. Can't wait to hear more!
