Well, i just thought about this poll, and why not?
I like Highland i think, no, Non water maps, hate water;)

I like small islands. Forces conflict, with nowhere to run. Admittedly, it becomes more of a wargame than a broad RTS/RPG under those circumstances... :samurai:

The bad thing about sea battles in AOM, is the STRICT paper-rock-scissors warfare. Sea warfare in AOK was a LOT more interesting.

I disagree. Sea battles in aok were more of an econ game than actually having the right ships (you only had galleon line units). That said, watermaps were always my favourite, no matter what kind. That goes from aok to aom, spanning a whole 2 games and one x-pack

Well, sea battles is Empires, is really not STRICT paper-rock-scissors warfare! I Promise! Its really cool, though as i said i think, comfusing ...

Feb 28 2004, 11:52 AM
Well, first of all. The size. I think when we have huge sea battles, i cant command anything

And when sea is included, ships take over for the main consern, ground attacks. Yes, i really dont like naval fights, i really dont know why ... Or at lease i have tryed to explain it here ...!
Well, simply because i think its comfusing. And in like team Islands, i cant rush

lol

AOK had a lot more variety: Galleons, Cannon Galleons, Fireships, Demolishion Ships, Trade Cogs, and the various upgrades to them all.
AOM doesn't have trade cogs or demo ships. No water trade and no other "option" (demo ships) besides the paper-rock-scisors of Arrow > Hammer > Siege ship.
EDIT: BTW, where did ES pull the "hammer" ship out of? Pretty historically inaccurate.

Yeah that's probably true and besides, this forum isn't very active all the others are but this one isn't. It will probably change when the game comes out though.

Well, hehe, Scandinavians knows the sea. We (almost) INVENTED fishing. So its not because I'm from Scandinavia. It's simply because i dont like seabattles in RTS- games.

I like highlands in AoK and in Empires DotMW and some water is good like a river dividing players or something.

Highlands, by far. I hope 0 A.D. will have some sort of map without anywater whatsoever, though. Like "Plains" in EE.

I don't like maps with resource screws, eg, Argh!!! The enemy has 5 gold piles in his town and I only have 1!!!! Of course, you could have like 5 gold piles and the enemy could only have 1... Then gold screws are good...

I don't think you can prevent gold screws - randomness is never fair. Unless you are going make every seed map by hand, of course, it is impossible to my knowledge.

Of course! RMSes are nothing but parameters! The trouble is, there is something in the way, so the gold doesn't placed.

Gold screw is fun! Especially when you're the one screwed.
Why?
Because then you can focus on micro raids and over with a forward base (Micro > Macro!)
All Gold Screw does is move the battlefield closer to your enemy's base. That's better for you... if you micro well.

I love big maps with all kinds of terrain and elevation possibilities
The bigger the map the better
I am also not too crazy about water battles only because so far they have sucked
but I have a feeling i am going to love them in 0AD

When you say "screw" are you referring to plots of resources as in Cossacks or Warcraft III?

I like either random small island maps, mediterranean or structured maps - ones which have a small chokepoint with lots of resources in -forcing constant battle for basic resources.

I like large island maps, or continent maps. I also like infinite resources, like in Rise of Nations.

I'm fond of half land, half water maps, sometimes even island ones since the other player usually isn't up to building a water base. But my very favourite map in any RTS was Alfheim in AOM. I loved all the mountains and choke points. I hope there are a few mountainous maps planned for 0 AD.

yeah, greece is a heavily mountainous area, but its good to know that you can trap your enemies in a certian place while you can train more troops and build some defences

We have quite a few Greek maps planned - all mountainous, some with lots of islands. I think you'll be pleased. We are doing our best to make each map look authentic to the biome or area of the world they represent. We've poored over hundreds of images of Greece, Italy, and all over the Mediterannean in an attempt to replicate these areas accurately.

Sometime towards release I might do a few showcases of different kinds of maps.

This assumes gold is placed 100% randomly. In most RMSs, things are set so each player only has 1 gold mine within 200 metres of his base.
