The Balrogs were Maiar of fire who turned to Morgoth during the first ages of Arda and were among his most powerful servants. They were forms of shadow and fire, and wielded axes or swords of flame. Fëanor perished at the hands of the Balrogs. The only Balrog mentioned by name is Gothmog, the Chieftain of the race, but there are several unnamed Balrogs of prominance. Glorfindel fought one on Cirith Thoronath to protect escapees from Gondolin at its fall, and one Balrog drove the Dwarves from Moria and fought Gandalf on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm. It was thrown from the peak of Zirakzigil by the wizard, probably making the Balrog race extinct.
